Staten Island and lower Manhattan

We started the day with the ferry journey to Staten Island and back. The service operates 109 times a day and is similar to Sydney's Manly Ferry except that the 25 minutes journey is free and the ferries are a very distinctive orange colour.

Photos from the trip.

Back on Manhattan we started a long walk through the lower districts of the island.

We stopped for lunch at this 24 hour diner in the Tribeca district. The burgers were delicious.

Finally weariness hit us and we detoured to the 23rd Street subway to catch the train home.

  1. Great photos. The Washington Square apartment building is a curious beast. It appears to a mix of architectural styles. The ferries are huge and yet still run so many trips. Staten Island must be very busy. A couple of the 'suits' look rather good.

    1. Thanks Andrew. The ferry seems to be very efficient. I'm not sure whether Staten Island is busy - it didn't seem that way in our entire half hour on the island (they make you get off rather than stay on for the return journey) - but as a free journey it is a great way to obtain a fantastic sightseeing tour.

  3. Bringing back fond memories of my trip there in 2011. Really enjoyed New York, stayed in Chelsea.

    1. Allan, I like that part of town. We are staying in upper midtown which means a lot of subway travel but also gives us breaks from the tourist crowds.

    1. Gosia, the Flatiron Building often is shown in movies and television shows set in New York.
