No words

Isn't this a lovely looking family?

I don't know the family. I never met them. The day after this photo was taken they were driving on one of our roads. It was Boxing Day. It was also the last drive that three of them would ever take and almost certainly also the last drive of the fourth family member. The family was involved in a car crash.

Funerals of the three family members shown left to right in the photo were held yesterday. The life support for the woman on the right was turned off this morning.

The driver of the other car, it is said was returning from receiving methadone treatment. It is also reported that the other driver had more than 60 convictions, including at least 10 convictions for driving while disqualified and allegedly had been subject to a nine-year driving ban.

I should stress that I do not know the circumstances of the collision; in particular whether blame for the collision can be, or will be, attributed to either driver.

The other driver also died in the collision.

  1. From what I heard, the methadone driver was travelling a a very high speed.

  2. This happened less than 40km from where I live. Maybe a month or so before this crash we drove down to Ulladulla and a car identical to the one in the crash with a p plate on it was driving quite dangerously. I will never know if it was the same guy or not, even though we have a dashcam it only saves the files for a certain amount of time. But it makes me wonder if we should have reported it when it happened, we had the file and we could have taken it to the police. And that makes me wonder if really we should be reporting a lot more of the dangerous driving we see, because we do see a lot of it now.

I feel like there has to be some accountability on the part of the judges on this occasion, if what has been reported is true. Even if only part of it is true, it seems to me this guy should not have been on our roads.

  3. This is such a terrible tragedy. I thought the worse the other day when I saw the news headline that the remaining woman's life support had been turned off but it seemed that she no longer needed it (though she is still in a critical condition).
