Quartet

A friend of My's and me told us we should not see 'Quartet' because she had and she thought it was 'boring as bat shit'. Not ones to let another's opinion put us off a film we went to see it anyway. In short we enjoyed it. Our friend who is half a generation younger than us might feel differently about the movie in fifteen years time.

The film is set in a nursing home for retired musicians. Some of the residents, but by no means all of them, are in some stage of dementia. A newly arrived resident revives memories for the longer standing residents, memories that are both sweet and painful.

Our friend may not have enjoyed this film because with a cast that includes Maggie SmithBilly Connolly and Pauline Collins she expected to be viewing a comedy. Whilst there are humorous moments and lines in 'Quartet' the film is not a comedy as such but a drama and a poignant one at that. A drama peppered with an operatic and classical music soundtrack.

Those of us of senior years or who are close to people of senior years will recognise much of the behaviour represented in the film - and find the humour in it.

★★★1/2
