A sullen building caretaker (Casey Affleck) reluctantly takes on the guardianship role for his teenage nephew following his brother's untimely death. The pressures of the situation bring tragic memories to the fore.
Despite a relentless sadness and the wintery settings 'Manchester By The Sea' manages to incorporate a level of humour.
