We stopped to see the former US Forces monitoring post at Hai Van Pass which also is the dividing line between the climate zones of North and South Vietnam.

Arriving in the old imperial city of Hue in the afternoon we were immediately into touring mode.
First stop was the tomb of Tu Duc completed before the Emperor's death and used by him and his family as a country retreat.
Then on to the old imperial city modelled on Beijing's Forbidden City.
I believe now there is a road and rail tunnel under the mountain traversed by Hai Van Pass. Far more interesting to go over the mountain that under it, except our bus driver turned the vehicles air con off to get up the mountain. The run offs for trucks with failed brakes when descending were a little disturbing. Hue looks very impressive.
ReplyDeleteYou are correct about the tunnels Andrew. Our Air Con remained on, which was a relief. I also noticed what seemed to be woefully inadequate emergency run offs.
DeleteYou're inspiring me Victor. Thinking about my next big trip.
ReplyDeleteJames, I recommend Vietnam/Cambodia as a holiday destination.
