Devil

In 1999, M Night Shyamalan burst into prominence with 'The Sixth Sense', the mystery with it's well camouflaged twist that left a big impact on me and plenty of others. I went to see his next couple of films with high expectations only to be disappointed as each fell short of it's predecessor. Night Shyamalan has appeared to be in a downward spiral ever since and I haven't bothered to see his recent films.

Now he is back with 'Devil'; a film which has arrived here rather quietly and unheralded. That is often a sign that a film is a clunker but for some reason I ignored the omens and took my chances.

I'm rather glad I did.

The overall premise is not original, indeed it has been used many times before. A group of strangers is trapped in a situation together. Are they who they appear to be? Who are the villains and who are the innocents? Whatever; viewers know that no good can come to this group. For one thing the film's one word title speaks volumes and in case of doubt the early voice over narrative reveals with surprising accuracy what we are about to see.

'Devil' is not a match for 'The Sixth Sense' but it is the most enjoyable Night Shyamalan film I have seen since. A very simple photographic illusion during the opening credits is distinctly disorienting and gets the film of to a cracking start. A dull bit follows as the scene is set but once underway 'Devil' is good value as a B-grade horror/thriller flick. The soundtrack goes over the top at times and the religious references won't suit everyone but I foresee a great future for this film as a stormy night, stay at home, movie treat.

'Devil' is clearly intended as the first in a series of films. I'm looking forward to the next instalment.

  1. 'Sixth Sense' is one of my favorite films. I'm glad to hear that 'Devil' is similar in quality.

  2. Mark - I don't think it is of similar quality but I think it is his best since The Sixth Sense.
